Oakland Youth Chorus is a professional training program where young singers learn songs from a variety of cultures around the world and explore the cultural and historical context of the songs they are singing. Our students build music skills based on California’s state music education standards, including pitch, dynamics, body percussion and movements. Elementary school Miracle Chorus members from Oakland, Alameda & the East Bay have several opportunities to perform at community events such as two professional choral concerts produced by OYC, the Oakland Holiday Parade, mini-tours and school-specific events. Frequently, Miracle singers go on to join OYC’s Middle School Magic and high school Concert Choruses, open to youth from around the Bay Area. OYC alumni include professional performers such as LaToya London (American Idol Season 3), goalpele, Victoria Theodore (tours with Stevie Wonder) and jazz vocalist Valerie Troutt.
