This class is a unique blend of interactive storytelling and an introduction to musical theatre, age-appropriate, classics (e.g. Aladdin, Beauty & The Beast, The Little Mermaid, Peter Pan, The Sound of Music, etc.). In exploring the stories behind the songs, youngsters will be able to better appreciate and communicate the lyrics of the various songs being taught. Participants will also be introduced to simple musical theatre dance steps and will participate in group games, all in a gentle, relaxed environment. An assortment of costumes and simple props will be provided to help 'bring to life' the song's characters. INSTRUCTOR HEATHER SANDERSON studied classical theatre at RADA in London and prior to moving to Alexandria acted extensively in the San Francisco Bay Area. As "Miss Heather", she is known locally for instilling a love of theatre - in particular Shakespeare - into the hearts of children. Her youth Shakespeare troupes have performed in D.C. and in the U.K. and her privately coached monologue students have performed at the Shakespeare Theatre, the Ford's Theatre and numerous community and children's theatres in the area. Heather may be familiar to fans of British television programs through her Tea with Heather segments on Maryland Public Television's Afternoon Tea. ASSISTANT INSTRUCTOR SARAH LORE is a high school student at West Potomac. She has performed with the Washington National Opera at the Kennedy Center and at the Edinburgh Festival in Scotland. She has been a member of the Virginia State honors choir (twice) and a soloist for the West Potomac Jazz Band. Sarah has appeared as Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors, Sarah in Guys & Dolls, Dot in Honk, and in other local productions.
