The City of Athens Parks and Recreation is taking registrations now through Thursday, November 3, 2016 for the 2016-2017 Fundamental Basketball League. The league is for boys and girls kindergarten through the 8th grade. The focus of this league is to teach the fundamentals of basketball, introduce new players to the game and to improve the health of the players through physical exercise. This is done with a maximum two hour per week commitment, with one hour set aside for practice and one hour for games. All players will play a minimum of two complete quarters of each game.
There will be a skills assessment day on November 4th and practices will begin in November at city elementary schools during the week. Games will be played December through February on Saturdays at the Athens City Middle School. A year end tournament will be held on February 4, 2017.
Applications are also being accepted for volunteer coaches and assistants. Anyone wishing to coach or assist will be required to pass a background check and complete a training course. Applications are available in the office or online and must be submitted by Monday, October 31, 2016.
The cost is $50 per player which includes a reversible jersey, a basketball, secondary medical insurance for each player, and all coach background checks. If players already have an official league jersey the fee is $45 per person.
Players may register at the Athens Parks and Recreation office located in the Athens Municipal Building, 815 N. Jackson Street, Monday through Friday 8 am to 5 pm, or convenient online registration is available at www.cityofathenstn.com/parks. Visa, MasterCard and American Express are accepted.
