Transcend the boundaries of the banjo! We all love Earl, but the Scruggs book is not gospel. If you are an intermediate/ advanced 3-finger banjo picker looking to explore some of the dark arts of modern banjo techniques, then this is the class for you! This program will focus on adapting familiar Scruggs-style rolls to expressive melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic concepts. We will not only explore and develop skills within melodic style and single-string playing, but how to seamlessly integrate them into traditional picking for a fluid two-handed approach to playing. Through combining right-hand exercises, extensive left-hand shifting concepts, and scale pattern sequences & etudes, students will learn to unlock the hidden melodic geometrical mysteries of fretboard in open tuning- IN ANY KEY!! Notable banjo pioneers discussed will include Bela Fleck, Tony Trischka, Bill Keith, Ryan Cavanaugh, Noam Pikelny, Jens Kruger, Scott Vestal and many more. These banjo players may have paved the way for a new wave of "outside the box" banjoists, but they wouldn't have gotten there if they had only channeled the playing of traditional banjo forefathers such as Earl, JD Crowe, and Don Reno. This class is designed to help you learn how to play the music YOU want to play! We will explore techniques and concepts from other instruments, genres, and music from around the world. Equipped with this modern banjo toolkit, you will leave this class with the fundamental skills for your own advanced transcriptions and arrangements. Toward that end, each class I will present examples and motifs gathered from Bach to Charlie Parker, percussion traditions of South India, Central Africa, and Brazil, and the slick pickin' of modern superstars such as Chris Thile, Bryan Sutton, Jerry Douglas, and countless others..
