About This Activity

The Hyde Park Neighborhood Choir rehearses twice weekly at the First Unitarian Church of Chicago (5650 South Woodlawn Avenue). In 1956 during the Civil Rights Movement, the late Christopher Moore founded Chicago Children's Choir at this very church. Today, the Hyde Park Neighborhood Choir serves boys and girls from the Hyde Park, South Shore, Kenwood, Woodlawn, Washington Park, and surrounding neighborhoods. Neighborhood Choir members audition as early as 3rd grade and many continue into high school. At the Neighborhood Choir level, boys and girls learn proper vocal technique, music reading and sight singing skills, as well as the discipline of singing with musicality, movement, and expression. Singers are offered numerous performance opportunities to exhibit the diverse repertoire reflecting the multicultural mission of Chicago Children’s Choir. The Hyde Park Neighborhood Choir has been invited to sing for the Interfaith Thanksgiving Service at Rockefeller Memorial Chapel, and with such groups as the Hyde Park Symphony Orchestra and at Little Black Pearl. Members of the Hyde Park Neighborhood Choir have traveled to Nashville, Tennessee, Boston and Amherst, Massachusetts, the Bay Area in California, and Minneapolis, Minnesota.
