About This Activity

Sequence 1A - Exploring with Minecraft: A gentle introduction to the world of computers and Minecraft! With guidance and oversight from our instructors, you will explore the world of Minecraft and learn important computer skills in a fun and forgiving environment. At the end of the course, we will discuss computer etiquette and "netizenship", or how to behave when on the Internet. Sequence 1B - Developing with Minecraft (Grades 1 - 2): A fast-paced introduction to the world of Minecraft. You will learn about the game mechanics and environment of Minecraft and explore its possibilities together with your fellow classmates. This course is faster-paced than Sequence 1A, as students are expected to advance through their workbooks alongside in-person instruction. At the end of the course, we will discuss computer etiquette and "netizenship", or how to behave when on the internet. Sequence 2 - Engineering with Redstone (Grades 3 - 4): Learn how to make fun and interesting contraptions using redstone, the electricity of Minecraft! You will explore the fundamentals of electrical engineering and circuit design while building virtual puzzles, traps, and even a simple calculator with redstone. We will also discuss the principles of binary math and how computers store information, important for anybody interested in how computers actually work. Sequence 3 - Programming with ComputerCraft (Grades 5 - 10): Learn the fundamentals of computer programming in Minecraft! You will learn programming concepts as you explore the world of ComputerCraft and robots (aka turtles). This class is a great stepping stone toward learning more advanced programming such as modding in Java. Sequence 4 - Minecraft Modding with Java (Grades 6 - 10): Learn how to make your own blocks, armor, and even animals in Minecraft! You will learn exactly what "modding" is as well as how to use the programming language Java to write your own mods.
