Lifeguards protect their community by preventing, recognizing, and responding to water-related emergencies. In order to get a job at most facilities, you need to become certified, and most employers look for American Red Cross Certification.
Those who are interested in taking this class will need to commit to working for the City and County of Denver in Parks and Recreation.
LIFEGUARDING BLENDED LEARNING DELIVERY
The American Red Cross introduces the new blended learning offering of the Lifeguarding program which combines online knowledge acquisition and in-person water, first aid and CPR/AED skills training. Building on the same knowledge and skills as our traditional in-person only training, the course trains lifeguards to act with speed and confidence in emergency situations both in and out of the water. Topics include: water rescue skills, surveillance and recognition, first aid, breathing and cardiac emergencies, CPR, AED and more.
Pre course Swimming Skills Evaluation - - These skills will be completed at the Pre-Course session on December 19th and will determine eligibility for the course.
Swim 300 yards continuously using the front crawl (freestyle) and breaststroke only. This swim must be done using rhythmic breathing with your face in the water; goggles may be worn if needed.
Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs, you will be asked to have your hands above the water for the entire 2 minutes.
Retrieve a 10lb brick from a depth of 7-10 feet.
- Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using the front crawl or breaststroke.
- Submerge to a depth of 7-10 feet to retrieve a 10 lb brick
- Return to the surface and swim 20 yards to return the brick to the starting point ? both hands must be holding the brick and at the surface of the water with your face out of the water.
- Exit the water
Candidates must successfully complete the pre-course session to continue with the class.
