Join our experienced naturalist John Powers for a sneak peak at one of our local caves. Learn about the local geology and history of this hidden wonder. Participants will meet onsite. Please remember to bring: a water bottle, wear long pants, and be prepared to get a little dirty. Also athletic, walking, or hiking shoes (no sandals) Helmets and lights provided. Cave tour (40 minutes) is mostly walking and stooping. Cave temp is 54 degrees. Trip will include a 3 mile round trip hike along the C&O Canal.
MEETING LOCATION: Dam #4 Parking area, Downsville, MD.
Go West on I-70 to Hagerstown, Take Exit 28, Route 632 Downsville Pike South for 5.1 miles. At Downsville, go straight through 4 way intersection to Dam# 4 Rd. Dam #4 Rd makes a sharp fork at one point, so watch for it & bear right. Just before meeting the Potomac River, you will descend a curvy hill to where road parallels the river for about 1/10 mile. Meet at small parking lot on left in front of Dam#4. Please try to be there before 1 PM. If you miss it, road dead-ends at boat launch parking lot in (1/2) mile. There are restrooms there. In Goggle maps input Downsville, MD. Search for either "Power Plant & Dam#4. Or Western MD Sports Club (its next to Dam#4 parking area)
