This class is an introduction to boating and independence on the water. Students should be able to swim in salt water in a life jacket. PROGRAM: The program is a mix of land-based activities and boating activities. We will learn how wind and sails work together to make a boat move through the water. Several different knots are needed to rig a sailboat, so we will practice basic knot tying. Sailing uses a different vocabulary, so we will learn the words that are used for parts of the boat and directional activities on the water. SAILING: Students will experience sailing with an instructor, with other children, and by themselves. We will use our Opti class boats which are small, safe sailboats, and will stay relatively close to the docks for this initial boating situation. There are many fun activities we can do on the water to make sailing and boating a comfortable experience for the beginner.
