The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies, and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services personnel take over. Participants must pass a prerequisite swim test (300 yard continuous swim, tread water for 2 minutes, and complete a timed brick retrieval test in 7 feet of water) on the first day in order to be accepted in the class. Participants must attend ALL class sessions and pass a written and practical skills test in order to become certified as a Lifeguard. All students receive a Lifeguard book, hip pack, breathing barrier and whistle.
All participants must be at least 15 years old. Passing this class does not guarantee a position with the City of Gilroy.
Proper bathing suit is required. No bikinis, cut-off shorts, loose shorts or t-shirts are permitted. Rash guards are allowed. Please bring googles, snacks, lunch, water bottle, sunscreen and towels to each class. Age verification check will be done on the first day of class (birth certificate, passport or driver's license required).
