420 – 1 Intermediate - Beginner The 420-1 course is open to all children of appropriate age regardless of their membership status at AYC. 420 1’s is intended for beginner or intermediate sailors and tennis players who have outgrown the Opti and are not yet ready for the racing program. Appropriate age range is 13-17. Sailing The 420-1’s class builds on the mastery of the basic skills of sailing, but in a two-person sloop design boat. Participants will work on developing advanced sailing skills and continue developing their tennis skills. A 420-1 sailor will be able to master basic knots, be held to a high standard of boat care and storage while making minor repairs, and a strong understanding of the parts of the boat and sail and their effects on powering and depowering the boat. Sailors in the 420-1’s will have a constant awareness of the wind, be able to trim for different points of sail and conditions, have an awareness of body position relative to wind and wave conditions, and be able to work well with a crewmate. The 420-1’s will learn how to roll-tack, effectively trim mainsail, jib and fly a spinnaker and make controlled gybes in medium to high wind, tack without falling-off the breeze, sail in and out of the river independently, land on docks or instructor’s motor boat safely, and have mastered a basic understanding of the Rules of the Road. Tennis 420-1 Tennis players will be encouraged to compete in senior division of the parent tournaments, and to play matches in Friday afternoon Inter club competitions, and to join Monday Night Teen Tennis.
