About This Activity

This demonstration workshop explores the unique properties and methods of paper clay which allow Sara Ransford to create her delicate, thin sculptures exhibited in the upcoming show: "Playing with Your Expectations". Over the course of the day, she will divulge her process, starting with how she makes her clay, where she gets her materials, and the remarkable building capabilities paper clay provides. Additionally, she will demonstrate the process used in creating her own sculptures and discussions on her inspiration, concept and the dialogue she hopes to inspire through her work. Sara, a Loma/Aspen resident, has been working in clay since 1979, and has studied under Betty Woodman, Anne Currier, John and Andrea Gill, Rebecca Hutchinson and Doug Casebeer, among others. She received her BFA from Boulder, CU, studied at Alfred University, and spent three seasons at Anderson Ranch as an artist in resident. She has also taught workshops there and across Colorado. Her exhibition record includes the Aspen Art Museum, Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Arvada Center for the Arts, Western Colorado Center For The Arts, Las Cruces Museum of Art, Wyly Center for the Arts, Evelyn Siegel Gallery and Harvey Meadows Gallery. Sara writes about her work, “I explore the natural world in my sculptural forms. I am fascinated by the complexity in nature, and how that complexity reflects itself in our own world. The forces of erosion, the aspect of time, and things being created over eons, only to be changed in a single moment can create such vulnerability and duplicity in things we do not anticipate changing. These components culminate to represent the monumentality of even the most intimate, complex spaces.”
