FOR BLAKE RISING SENIORS ONLY. Students will be asked to read 40 essays, respond to an essay prompt, and complete the four-page Writer’s Survey. In class Mrs. Barrows will review the assigned essay examples and present additional materials and admission practices. There will be a break between the first and second hours with refreshments. The class examines the college essay as a literary genre, explores the writing process, and reviews the admission context. Please note: Students will not write their college essays as part of the class. The foundation for essay writing will be set by the students’ preparation before class, the four hours of class instruction, and through completion of the Writer’s Survey. Mrs. Barrows will review each student’s survey and return it with comments. She will meet with students individually to discuss essay drafts once school begins. Students who do not take this class meet first with their college counselor to discuss essay drafts and may meet with Mrs. Barrows after that. Finding Class Materials: ISS has replaced Moodle with Canvas. All course materials will be found on the new Canvas website, and once registered with Summer at Blake, students will receive a Canvas invitation on their Blake email account with instructions on how to access our course page. Specifically, the email will provide a link to the Canvas login page where students will enter their Blake email user name (imstudent17) but omitting @blakeschool.org in the USER NAME box, and then enter their Blake email password in the PASSWORD box, and then clicking LOG IN. Once logged in, please click the Courses icon at the top of the screen, select "My Courses" and look for our class title: Preparing for the College Application Essay. Click on the title to open the class page. Please contact Mr. Trockman if you have difficulty logging in or navigating on Canvas.
