The Arts and Mathematics have been intertwined for millennia, from Greek art to modern architecture and everything in between. The goal of this week long program is to expose young kids to hands-on, fun, art-related math topics. We seek to generate math appreciation, promote abstract thinking and reveal the many connections between art and math. Each day will include age-appropriate activities that are related to a deep theorem or area of mathematics. Topics will include: the art of M. C. Escher, the design of the Alhambra palace and the mathematics of floor tilings; the coloring of maps; Mo..bius bands and the concept of non-orientable surfaces; and more, all designed to make youngsters say, “WOW!” Taught by Alvaro Lozano-Robredo, father of two little girls and a mathematician who specializes in Number Theory. He is an Associate Professor of Mathematics and the Director of the Quantitative Learning Center at the University of Connecticut.
