The Water Safety Instructor Course trains instructor candidates to teach group and private swim lessons and water safety topics through the American Red Cross.
Through video and hands-on skill building, the course includes all the water safety and drowning prevention tools and information needed to plan and conduct courses in American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program, including Parent and Child Aquatics, Preschool Aquatics, Learn-To-Swim, Longfellow's WHALE Tales, Safety for Swim Coaches, six water safety presentations and two water safety courses
Candidates must successfully pass the following course pre-requisites:
1. Swim the following strokes consistent with level 4 testing for 25 yards: front crawl, back crawl, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, sidestroke.
2. Swim the following stroke consistent with level 4 testing for 15 yards: butterfly
3. Tread water and back float (sculling or finning allowed) for 1 minut
To pass, candidates must:
1. Complete all online orientations and content (please note that all blended learning classes have 7-10 hours of required pre-course work that must be successfully completed before in-person skill sessions)
2. Attend all class sessions as scheduled
3. Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities
4. Correctly answer at least 80 percent of the questions in the final written exam
Enrollment note: Registration closes 2 weeks before first in-person date. Minimums must be met to run courses. No refunds are given if candidate fails pre-requites but credit for class can be reapplied to a future American Red Cross course or offering through Iowa City Parks & Recreation.
