About This Activity

Prerequisites: Camp Fire Balcones Backpacking Orientation, 6th grade age or older or family group. Be Prepared For: Rain, cold, heat, rugged terrain Meeting Time & Place: Saturday, 9:00 a.m. Wheatsville South, parking lot out front, 4001 South Lamar Blvd., Austin. Estimated Return Time and Place: Sunday, 3:00 p.m. Wheatsville South, parking lot out front, 4001 South Lamar Blvd., Austin. Coordinator Contact Information: Mina Loomis 512-797-3525 mkloomis@me.com Itinerary and Description of Event Activities: When we arrive at the park, we will backpack in to the primitive camping area at Wolf Mountain. Part of this hike will be off-trail, so we will get to practice our route-finding skills. We will hike back out after lunch on Sunday, and should be back in Austin by 3:00 p.m. Drivers will be trip leaders and assistant leaders and/or parents. Participants who ride in Camp Fire vans or with volunteer drivers are encouraged to bring an appropriate contribution for their driver’s gas. Backpackers should bring their own gear and meals, as detailed in equipment lists provided at Orientation. Bring water containers sufficient for approximately 1 gallon of water per person, or ½ gallon if you want to treat spring water. Water containers may be filled at the trailhead, but there is no piped-in drinking water at the primitive camping area. If there has been sufficient rainfall, we may be able to treat water from Jones Spring, and carry less. The primitive camping area at Pedernales Falls State Park is on a bluff overlooking the Pedernales River. Activities may include wading in the river, exploring crevices in the bluff, and hiking to a nearby spring. There are some geocaches (like letterboxes) in the park; we will get to try finding some of them if we want to. This trip includes skills workshops about backpacking stoves and backcountry meals. Come ready for some tasty learning!
