About This Activity

Instructor: Doug Pike Email: thevedadoway@gmail.com Students will analyze themes, symbols, and imagery; and they will immerse themselves in the larger, universal questions that are addressed. Our focus will be on U.S. literature and is likely to include the propaganda of Jamestown settler John Smith, a Cotton Mather sermon, transcendentalist Nathanial Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, Arthur Miller’s treatment of the Red Scare by means of the Salem witch trials in his play The Crucible, Mark Twain’s take on slavery in Huckleberry Finn, realist Stephen Crane’s reaction to the Civil War in The Red Badge of Courage, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s reflections on the American Dream in The Great Gatsby, and Joseph Heller’s cynical view of society and war in Catch-22. Students will be reading more for Tuesday classes, given that they have only two days before the ensuing Thursday class.
