During farm programming, children engage in the real daily work of the farm including animal care, building and maintaining natural habitats, and helping grow food. Children will plant, tend, and harvest fruits and vegetables and explore in great depth the source of our food. They'll learn how to grow and raise food using organic and sustainable farming methods and learn about why we have chosen those methods. We'll enjoy the food we've tended by using the best of the harvest to make wood-fired pizza in our bread oven. We'll also emphasize forging connections with the natural world. Children will learn how to identify species and the role individual species play in the larger ecosystem, and we'll leave ample time for free exploration and play in nature and take on nature-based projects led by student interest. In this session, special emphasis will be placed on understanding habitats, for both humans and other animals. All programming is led by Ana Skemp, M.S. Ecology, owner of Deep Roots Community Farm and Josh Wolcott, M.S. Education and M.A. Art, and Lead Teacher for School of Technology and Art, School District of La Crosse. 9:1 staff to child ratio. Children will be asked to bring their own healthy snacks and lunch.
