***This Class is for Intermediate Mountain Bike Riders. For riders without Mountain Biking experience, please look for our Series 1 Camps***

This Class has SAFETY and EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS

In order to provide the safest possible environment for class participants, please make sure that:

1. Participant bikes are in good working order. Please make sure that brakes are working and shifting (gears) is also working. Make sure tires and brakes are not worn. Note: if the bike needs work, local bike shops may need a week to complete the work. Please budget this into getting the bike class-ready.

2. Participant bikes have more than one gear. We will be climbing up hills.

3. Participant bikes have a front wheel and rear wheel hand brake. No coaster brakes.

4. Participant bikes have tires with knobby tread suitable for riding off-road.

5. Participant bikes are a good fit. A bike too big or too small can pose safety concerns.

6. Participants have a helmet that fits correctly. Helmets need to be free of cracks and damage. Helmets need to be worn correctly (i.e., covering the forehead)

If instructors feel that a participant’s bike or helmet are not safe, they will not be allowed to ride during class.

Series 2/3 (Intermediate)Fitness level: Medium/activeReview the fundamentals of mountain biking in a fun and safe environment while improving and learning new skills.

  • Braking
  • Shifting
  • Body position
  • Pedal position
  • Eye movement

and improve skills such as

  • Cornering: Switchbacks and higher speed corners
  • Roll downs
  • Climbing and descending
  • Dismounts while climbing and descending
  • Getting started on a climb
  • Track Stands
  • Pumping for momentum and traction

Skills are taught using the following structure:

1. Explain what the skill is and when you would use it. Then explain how to do the skill and what it should feel like.

2. Demonstrate the skill so participants have a visual of what the execution of the skill looks like.

3. Participants practice the skill in a progressive manner with lots of encouragement and assistance, if needed.

4. Apply the skill out on the trail (if conditions allow).

The focus will be on progression of skills according to each rider's abilities. Our goal is to create a safe and welcoming environment for all riders to improve. We will make sure no one gets left behind, and will provide different progressions if necessary.

We also cover group communication, trail etiquette, and basic bike maintenance. Class will be led by a BICP certified mountain bike coach.

The majority of the classes will be at "The Quarry," Lake Oswego Parks and Rec's bike park near East Waluga Park. One or more session will be at Sunny Slope Natural Area (near Westridge Park) where we can work on certain skills in an open area for an excellent learning environment. Full camp itinerary and meeting location details will be emailed to you prior to the start of camp.
