Ingenious Mechanisms I Levers and pulleys, cams and gears, ratchets and crankshafts—all ingenious mechanisms that are found in countless inventions. In this program for the mechanically inclined, students will learn basic skills of engineering design, tool use, and the application of simple machines to create whimsical devices from wood, metal, plastic and other items found around the Newton’s Attic shop. Each invention will consist of a combination of simple machines that all work together to perform a simple and amusing task. Students will witness firsthand how various parts work in concert to perform the intended function, as well as apply a little math and physics in the process. Throughout the week, young inventors will create several mechanisms they get to keep once camp is over.
