Coordinator Contact Information: Mina Loomis (512) 797-3525 or email@example.com Itinerary and Description of Event Activities: Sam Houston National Forest is in the pine woods of east Texas north of Houston. The hike is a loop near the west end of the Lone Star Hiking Trail. It will be about a 3½ -hour drive over there, so we will leave a little bit earlier. There is water available to filter on the trail. The area is not hilly like the hill country parks, but there are creeks, ravines, and some wildlife. We have two hiking options, and 8½mile loop that goes through the mixed pine and hardwood forest and some palmettos, and a 13½-mile loop that also goes through an extensive palmetto swamp and pond area, almost jungle-like. The Friday night camp area is not far from the parking. The Saturday night camp area has access to a fire ring. If there’s not a burn ban we can have an evening fire on Saturday. There might be a few mosquitoes (definitely not so much on this fall trip than that time in the spring) so bring protection. Note: Unless we run short of seat belts, Austin-area trip participants will be transported in Camp Fire vans for this trip. Houston area participants may meet us at the trailhead about 8:30 p.m.
