Green Crabs are an invasive species, native to Europe and very plentiful along our coastline. They prowl the rocky beach and shoreline tidal flats, are fast to move and happy to multiply. In this spirit, we have named this all-day program for kids ages 7 to 9, the very best age at which to seek out these crabs with an adventurous spirit. Like the crabs, we'll invade all pockets of the Merrimack River shoreline this week. This full day program is an ideal introduction to boat-based programs on the Merrimack River, as it's designed to immerse your child in the richness and diversity of the tidal landscape. Each day weâll head out onto the river aboard the Yankee Clipper to explore the natural habitats and cultural landmarks that make the Merrimack unique. Each session will include time for boat travel, shoreline exploration and cultural investigation. As with many of our programs, weâll also play a lot of games, sing a bunch of songs, and make a ton of art. Starting âdown alongâ and moving âup alongâ the river, weâll visit the barrier beaches, mud flats, salt marshes and uninhabited islands of this special watershed, and weâll learn about the customs of plants and the habits of animals who call these places home. Weâll also stopover at several unique cultural sites, including Lowellâs Boat Shop, where your child will have the chance to row a traditional wooden dory. On Friday, our journey up river will culminate with an overland trip to our private field site at Four Rock â a wild and forested landscape near the headwaters of the Great Marsh on Boston Road in Newbury.
