This for-credit course is the equivalent of the Head-Royce’s 11th grade Biology, modified for a summer immersion format; it may be taken in lieu of Head-Royce Biology in the academic year. This course covers essential concepts of molecular and cellular biology, including genetics, organismal physiology of plants and animals, and interactions of organisms in the community, ecosystem, and biosphere. There is approximately one hour of daily lab activity corresponding to the weekly lab period in the regular year course. In comparison with the regular year course, reading assignments outside the classroom are modified to match the increased pace of the class and increased daily class time through the immersion format; the science fair project will be optional. As an equivalent of our U.C. certified course, this course counts for U.C. credit. Students may choose to take this course on a for-credit or audited basis. See web site for more information on options related to transcript reporting and declaring for-credit status. Open to students in summers before and after 11th grade. There will be midterm and final exams. Prerequisite: Chemistry TEXT: Biology: Concepts and Applications, 7th Ed., ISBN-13: 978-0495-1199-75 Included in the course, instructors will distribute.
