Counselor-in-Training (CIT) – Take the Next Step Toward Leadership
The Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Program at YMCA Camp Nissokone is a three-week immersive experience for teens ready to grow into future camp leaders. Designed for youth who have aged out of traditional camp and are looking to build skills for work, service, and life, the CIT program blends leadership education, team bonding, and hands-on experience with the magic of Overnight Camp.
Set against the backdrop of Michigan’s north woods, the CIT journey builds on Nissokone traditions while preparing teens to be role models and positive influencers — both at camp and beyond.
Week 1: Leadership Foundations + Outdoor ChallengeCITs begin their journey with leadership training, team-building, and an off-site camping trip. Through engaging workshops and interactive sessions, they’ll explore topics like:
- Child development and camper behavior
- Cabin group dynamics and conflict resolution
- Communication, responsibility, and problem solving
Weeks 2 and 3: Hands-On Cabin Experience + Community ImpactIn weeks two and three, CITs are placed alongside seasoned staff to assist in cabins with younger campers, putting their skills into action with the guidance and support of experienced mentors.
They’ll also take part in a community service project, giving back to the camp or local area — reinforcing the YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.
By the end of the program, CITs are not just better prepared for future staff roles — they’re equipped with tools to thrive as leaders in any environment.
Graduates of the CIT program are invited to return later in the summer as volunteers — and may be eligible to apply as full staff members the following year.
