Trail Blazers - Take the Trail Less Traveled
The Trail Blazers Program at YMCA Camp Nissokone is the second level in our Wilderness Immersion – Leadership Development (WI-LD) track, created for campers entering Grade 8 who are ready for a deeper, more adventurous journey into Michigan’s remote and awe-inspiring landscapes.
Blending backcountry exploration with leadership development, Trail Blazers will take on a challenge that builds resilience, confidence, and lifelong memories — all while surrounded by the stunning natural beauty of the Great Lakes.
The ExpeditionTrail Blazers will embark on a 4-day, 3-night backpacking trip to North Manitou Island and Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. This unforgettable adventure includes:
- Hiking the iconic Sleeping Bear Dunes
- Exploring historic villages on North Manitou Island
- Camping beneath the stars on the remote Lake Michigan shoreline
- Immersing in wilderness navigation, teamwork, and outdoor living skills
Safety & SupportSafety is our top priority. Camp Nissokone’s tripping staff are highly trained in:
- Wilderness backpacking and navigation
- Wilderness First Aid and First Responder certification
- Group safety, backcountry cooking, and emergency communication
The Trail Blazers Program is where adventure meets growth — and leadership takes root.
We understand plans can change. Because we plan meals, staffing, and trip logistics ahead of time, cancellations must be emailed to camp@ymcadetroit.org by the Tuesday before your session. The following deadlines will be followed:
- Written cancellations received by January 31: 100% of paid program fees will be credited to your YMCA account for future use.
- Written cancellations received on or after February 1st: No refunds or credits will be issued. A $50 cancellation fee per child, per week will apply.
- Written cancellations received on or after April 1: No refunds or credits will be issued. A $100 cancellation fee per child, per week will apply.
- Registration fees and deposits are always non-refundable and non-transferable
