Lead, Learn, and Adventure – The LIT Experience Starts Here
At YMCA Camp Nissokone the Leaders in Training (LIT) program is a transformative two-week journey designed for teens ready to take the next step in leadership, independence, and outdoor adventure.
Blending camp traditions with real-world leadership experiences, the LIT program helps young leaders build confidence, strengthen their communication skills, and work as a team — all while enjoying the best of overnight camp and the wild beauty of Michigan.
Week 1: Leadership Skills + Camp ChallengeDuring Skills Week, LITs develop advanced leadership skills through team-building challenges, outdoor survival training, canoeing instruction, and planning workshops. They’ll take part in camp activities, engage with peers, and serve as Leaders of the Day, preparing for their biggest challenge yet: leading their own backcountry trip.
Week 2: Wilderness Canoe Trip on the AuSable RiverThe Trip Experience is a 4-day, 3-night canoe expedition down the scenic AuSable River. LITs paddle together, set up camp each night, and take turns guiding the group — putting their new leadership skills into action in the real world. Along the way, they’ll navigate the river, cook meals, support each other, and return to camp with stronger friendships, greater confidence, and memories that will last a lifetime.

We understand plans can change. Because we plan meals, staffing, and supplies ahead of time, cancellations must be emailed to camp@ymcadetroit.org by Tuesday before your session. The following deadlines apply:
- Written cancellations received by January 31: 100% of paid program fees will be refunded or credited to your YMCA account for future use.
- Written cancellations received on or after February 1st: A $50 cancellation fee per child, per week will apply. Additional paid program fees will be refunded or credited to your YMCA account for future use.
- Written cancellations received on or after April 1: A $100 cancellation fee per child, per week will apply. Additional paid program fees will be refunded or credited to your YMCA account for future use.
- Registration fees and deposits are always non-refundable and non-transferable

Camp registration is not complete until you have completed your online camper forms. Epact will send you an email to complete your profile - it is due one week prior to the start of the camp week.
