This American Red Cross program is designed for those ages 12-15 who want to learn water safety, CPR and basic first aid skills in a fun and exciting way. The program promotes physical fitness and development while building self-esteem and camaraderie.
It includes swimming, shadowing lifeguards, learning preventative lifeguarding techniques and competition. The duties and responsibilities of lifeguarding will be introduced, providing participants with a foundation of knowledge, attitude and skills for the American Red Cross lifeguarding course.
Instructors will conduct a swim test during the first class meeting; participants must successfully pass the swim test to participate.
Parents must be present on the first day of class.
Classes will meet two (2) times per week for up to three (3) hours each class meeting.
This class will last ten (10) weeks and include lifeguard shadowing at various City pool locations at the end of the class.
The American Red Cross swim test is required to participate. The applicants must be able to:
- Jump into deep water and float or tread water for one (1) minute.
- Swim 25 yards (one pool length) on the front or back.
- Exit the pool without using a ladder or steps.
It is recommended that participants have passed the Level 4 (Ages 6+ Yrs.) class prior to enrolling. Participants must be comfortable in water over their head and be a proficient swimmer.
Aquatic program withdrawals must be made prior to the second class of the session. Late requests will be processed as an account credit for 50% of the fee. Refunds are not available once the program begins. Credits or refunds will not be offered for class sessions cancelled or shortened due to inclement weather.
