Intermediate Chess Club is geared toward students who have had at least one full year of chess instruction. Participants will learn to use the correct terminology in chess, including “rank,” “file,” “center” and “diagonal,” as well as about forks, pins, skewers, discovered attacks, removing the defender, and speak about squares using the rank and file coordinate system. Students will be taught to record their moves, but will not be required to do so. In addition, GFS will be joining the Philadelphia Area Private School Chess League, which will be made up of the six independent schools in our region where Ross coaches! Beginning this fall, the league will compete in monthly matches, and the tentative schedule is as follows: October 22; November 12 (at The Philadelphia School); December 3; January 7 (at Germantown Friends School); and on February 4 (at Penn Charter). Ross will be sending out additional information about this exciting new initiative once plans have been solidified! Please note: Newcomers should contact Ross about making necessary arrangements to be brought up to speed. ASPire coverage for students in the Intermediate Chess Club will be available from 3:10-4:10 p.m. for a modest additional fee. Please note: GFS is closed on Thursday, November 24, so there will no club that day and the final club session will take place on Thursday, December 8.
