About This Activity

Enhance your basic Latin skills or move ahead on The Heights Latin track this summer. This adaptable program will benefit the student who simply wishes to firm his Latin foundation and serve to aid those who would like to advance more quickly. A Greek I program is also available to those looking to open the door to Greek language and culture. The program uses the texts written by Heights teachers as well as the Jenny’s Latin text. COURSES Latin A: for entering 8th graders; focuses on the declensions of nouns and adjectives and the conjugation of verbs; vocabulary is emphasized Latin B: for entering 9th graders; review of basic grammar followed by intermediate topics such as personal pronouns and demonstratives; extensive review of vocabulary Latin I: for entering 9th graders; review of basic grammar followed by advanced topics such as relative clauses and indirect statements; introduction of new vocabulary Latin II: for entering 10th graders; rapid review of all Latin grammar with an introduction to participles and the subjunctive mood; selections from Caesar’s Gallic Wars will be read Latin III: for entering 11th graders; readings of authors in original Latin; selections include Caesar’s Gallic Wars , the speeches of Cicero, Ovid’s Metamorphoses and medieval Latin authors Latin IV: for those preparing early for the A.P. Vergil test; close reading of Vergil’s Aeneid, with supplementary scholarly readings from each century since the epic’s production Greek I: for students who have taken Greek I and desire a more firm founding prior to Greek II; a complete exposure to grammar and vocabulary (with appropriate approval, the course is open to ambitious scholars who would like to skip Greek I and jump to Greek II in September) Hours 8:30 – 10:00 10:30 am – 12:00 pm Latin II -IV, Greek I Staff Justin Myers, current Latin teacher and co-author of The Heights’ Latin text, directs the program.
