"In this engaging middle school class, students will embark on a transformative journey from crafting strong paragraphs to composing well-structured three-paragraph essays. Through interactive lessons and hands-on activities, learners will explore the essential elements of essay writing, including thesis statements, topic sentences, supporting details, and effective conclusions. Students will participate in peer reviews and workshops that foster collaboration and constructive feedback, enabling them to refine their writing skills. The goal, by the end of the course, is to have each student able to confidently articulate their ideas in a cohesive essay format, setting a solid foundation for future writing endeavors. ELA 2 prior to or with this class would be beneficial to the students and is strongly encouraged. Students need to already know how to form a strong paragraph and be ready or almost ready for essay writing. There will be homework and access to a computer and Google account at home will be necessary. Students will have the use of computers/Chromebooks in class." Instructor: Audra Eckes Audra grew up on Long Island. After earning an MS in Deaf Education, she worked as a Teacher of the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing in NYC, Long Island, and Maryland. She moved to NC in 2007 for her career but wound up becoming a bonus mom to a child who eventually needed to be homeschooled. So, in 2014, a new “teaching”/learning adventure began. Besides learning, Audra’s other interests include reading, writing, photography, dog rescue, and spending time with her family.
