About This Activity

This beginner English Language Arts class will cover 3 parts of ELA study: grammar, spelling, and vocabulary. For grammar we will learn the parts of speech and types of sentences. Vocabulary and spelling will be differentiated according to each student's capabilities and will include the study of homonyms, homophones, and homographs, as well as synonyms and antonyms. Dictionary and thesaurus use will be included regularly as well. Classes are split between lecture, comprehension checks, and fun supporting activities like games and puzzles. Students should read at a 2nd grade level before taking this class. Will we have a small amount of writing for the concepts, but it is recommended for a fully rounded ELA experience, that students enroll concurrently with both this class and the From Sentences to Paragraphs: Building Strong Writing Foundations. Students will have rewarded, ungraded homework and will need to have access to a computer with internet service away from THE. Instructor: Stephenie Stevens """Ms. Stephenie has been homeschooling her children since 2019, and her family has been at THE since 2021. She has a Bachelors of Specialized Studies in Literature and Drama degree from Ohio University, and a Bachelors of Science degree in Genetics from NCSU. Her favorite classes to teach are high school literature and elementary math. Her philosophy of life is that we should all keep learning throughout life, and over the last several years she has learned a lot about meeting the students where they are both academically and socially. She anticipates continuing to learn more on this topic and many others because each student at each stage teaches her so much. She is overwhelmed with gratitude and joy for the opportunity to teach in this atmosphere."""
