This class will focus on a real community problem. Students will have agency to determine the nature of the problem, create a solution, and implement the solution as a community service project. This will be conducted through the Community Projects leg of Future Problem Solvers. We are very excited to participate with the 50-year old Future Problem Solvers international community. This organization helps prepare young people from 4th through 12th grades to be ready for an unknown future through programs designed to educate and inspire creative critical thinking. These programs teach better communication and collaboration with an evidence-based 6-step problem-solving approach that focuses on real life problems and solutions. For student participants in this class, we will utilize the problem solving methodology to address local needs. Throughout our determination and implementation phases, We will document steps and progress. Upon completion, the students can chose to present their project competitively to the NC Affiliate for the chance to advance to the International Conference. More information can be found at fpspi.org Instructor: Stephenie Stevens Ms. Stephenie has been homeschooling her children since 2019, and her family has been at THE since 2021. She has a Bachelor's of Specialized Studies in Literature and Drama degree from Ohio University and a Bachelor's of Science degree in Genetics from NCSU. Her favorite classes to teach are high school literature and elementary math. Her philosophy of life is that we should all keep learning throughout life, and over the last several years, she has learned a lot about meeting the students where they are both academically and socially. She anticipates continuing to learn more on this topic and many others because each student at each stage teaches her so much. She is overwhelmed with gratitude and joy for the opportunity to teach in this atmosphere.
