MAD LABS RIDGWAY: Fall 2016 6-Week Series, Session Two
Oct 26 - Dec 07
Ridgway Elementary School
From Oct 26, 2016 to Dec 07, 2016
DescriptionScience is more than a subject. It’s part of everything we do. The more we understand, the more we can appreciate and conserve our natural world. Join us for one or all of six MAD LABS taking place on Wednesday afternoons for hands-on, scientific activities that will encourage kids to experiment, learn, design, create, investigate, and more. Get your lab coats ready – we are going to get mad in our lab! Oct. 26: Sports Science How do you throw a ball the farthest? How do you get the most torque with a baseball bat? We’ll research and test out various theories to optimize distance, power, and speed as we look at the physics behind the actions in sports. Nov. 2: Geometry & Shapes Geometric shapes are all around us – from an eight-sided stop sign to square windows to rhombicosidodecahedrons. Join us as we explore the patterns within the angles and sides of these shapes. Nov. 9: Will It Float? We’ll learn why water is more dense than ice, why you float higher in the ocean than in a lake, and much, much, more during this lesson about density. Nov. 16: Color Have you heard that a red rose is actually every color other than red? Come find out why as we learn about how light and pigments create the colorful world around us. Nov. 30: Pendulums We’ll look into the physics of the hypnotizing back and forth swing of the pendulum, and discover why grandfather clocks and the first seismographs used them. Dec. 7: Salt We’ll play with the incredible chemistry of salt this week as we discover how it interacts with other substances and our bodies, and explore the beautiful crystals it creates on its own.
