About This Activity

Description

Summer Ballet Explorations! Our Ballet 1 participants will explore some of the great ballet works of all time. This summer’s selections are The Sleeping Beauty, Peter and the Wolf, Coppelia, Whipped Cream (a contemporary ballet choreographed by Alexander Ratmansky), Carnival of the Animals, and the all-time holiday favorite, The Nutcracker.
Each week will spotlight a different ballet story and its music, and students will have the opportunity to dance to the music as well as engage in fun activities like picture-drawing or coloring scenes from the ballets. Dancers will explore their creativity while learning about these wonderful stories and the ballets they have inspired.
Week I – The Sleeping Beauty (music by Pytor Ilyich Tchaikovsky)A princess and her kingdom sleep for a hundred years, and then everyone wakes up for abig celebration…
Week II – Peter and the Wolf (music by Sergei Prokofiev)Peter jumps over the garden wall and bravely faces a fierce wolf! Each of the seven characters in the story is represented by a different instrument in the orchestra.
Week III – Coppelia (music by Léo Delibes)Franz, a village boy, falls in love with a beautiful girl named Coppelia who sits and reads in the window of the toyshop. Coppelia turns out to be a doll!
Week IV – Whipped Cream (music by Richard Strauss)A child eats a lot of sweets at a Viennese pastry shop and falls into a delirious state. While in the hospital, fantastical and delicious characters dance in and out…
