At the Y, our nationally certified swim lesson program teaches children, youth, and adults personal safety, personal growth, stroke development, water sports & games, and rescue to develop a life-long passion for swimming and water activities. Our classes feature small instructor-to-student ratios and are structured to maximize in-water instructions. Our youth lessons are for kids six to twelve years old and teaches six strokes: front crawl, elementary backstroke, back crawl, breast stroke, sidestroke, and butterfly.
Polliwog: Designed for the school-age beginner who has little or no experience. Emphasis is placed on water adjustment, kicking on front and back, basic paddle stroke, floating on front and back, basic backstroke, and pool safety. There are no prerequisites for enrollment other than age requirement.
Guppy: This level is for school-age advanced beginners that can swim 15 feet on their own but need to work on their freestyle technique. Rotary breathing will be introduced, as well as a more advanced technique for backstroke and elementary backstroke. Participants will work on floating on front and back, treading water, deep-water swimming, pool safety, and introduction to diving.
Minnow: For children who can already swim 1 length of the lap pool (25 meters) with freestyle, backstroke, sidestroke, and breaststroke. Proper rotary breathing technique will be stressed, and participants will be introduced to butterfly in addition to refining all the strokes.
Fish: Children will continue to refine their strokes and work toward swimming longer distances (50 meters) with an increased expectation of proper stoke technique. Fish students will be introduced to surface dives, butterfly strokes, and advanced synchronized swimming skills.
Flying Fish: The focus of the Flying Fish level is perfecting previously learned strokes over greater distances (100 meters). Flying Fish students will continue the development of butterfly and are introduced to flip turns, the lifesaving stroke, and additional rescue techniques.
Shark: In this advanced level students have mastered the competitive strokes. Children will learn the inverted breaststroke, trudgen crawl, and life-saving skills. They will perform the 200 yards individual medley.
