About This Activity

Science Fair Advisors, Mr. Kevyn Adams: kevyn.adams@basised.com Dr. Anuradha Murthy: anuradha.murthy@basised.com Dr. Casey Brown: casey.brown@basised.com Through this program students have an opportunity to compete in the Synopsys Science and Technology Competition that is held in March. Winning middle school projects go on to California State and the National Broadcom Masters. Although conducting the experimental projects are the personal responsibility of the students, teacher advisors will help students adhere to a timeline, check for progress, suggest improvements, troubleshoot problems, and give feedback on the conclusion and visual display board. Please note the experimental project is done at home and the student bears the cost for the materials and if selected for the competition, cost of competition as well ($15:00 for individual entry and $30:00 for team entry). A panel of teachers will determine the projects to be entered in the competition and at that point advisors will also help the students fill the competition applications and submit them to Synopsys. General criteria for selection will include originality of question, experiment design, timely collection of data, validity of conclusion, and clarity of presentation. Mentoring for this program is through a series of 15 workshops designed to set the student up for success in completing a project and creating a display board. Each workshop costs $25.00 and will be conducted on Wednesdays, 4-5 pm. Students attending 5th grade can register for the workshops but cannot participate in the Synopsys competition. IMPORTANT DATES: Synopsys Science Fair Check in on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 – All competing projects must be in school by 8:30 AM Synopsys Science Fair on Thursday, March 23 – Judging and Public Viewing – Students must attend/present project. MANDATORY WORKSHOPS are designated with an askterik (*)
