Description


Sharpen your professional and practical writing skills with this mixed course of writing workshop and content review of key style and grammar issues. Each week highlights a different genre and allows students to work on their own important writing projects during the workshop. Attend only the sessions that interest you and leave the course with an improved draft of your most important documents whether short story, memoir, cover letter, resume, grant proposal, or blog post.

Week 1: Business Documents and Language Foundations
* how to produce business documents (e.g., cover letter, resume)
* how to provide feedback to others on creative work
* submit & review?> plan for enhancing communication skills that identifies five areas for improvement; draft lists of resume content (i.e., skills, jobs, references)

Week 2: Memoir, Blogging, and Language Flow
* how to develop a voice and tell a compelling story
* how to achieve movement with dynamic yet restrained language choices
* refine & review resume
* submit & review?> literacy narrative or ?Rousseau Confessions? essay

Week 3: Arguments, Grant Writing, and Language Precision
* how to write an essay that makes a compelling, interesting point: ?So what??
* how to develop a grant proposal that receives funding (per Jon O?Brien?s model)
* how to write for an audience including consideration of their respective needs, values, and attitudes toward the subject: audience analysis
* refine & review resume
* submit & review?> writer?s choice: profile? short story? scene?

Week 4: Document Design and Language Power
* how to choose strong words, images, and layout for the most compelling message
* how to select illustrative verbs that deliver the message quickly and effectively
* refine & review resume
* submit & review?> essay, grant proposal, letter to the editor, or other argument

Week 5: Graphic Novels, Videos, Graffiti, Poetry, Music, and Language
* how to further develop communication skills in new media genres
* how to wield language effectively to achieve your goals
* best practices in effective communication media: electronic slideshow
