Hold your sea-horses, little ones! We’re going to have the best week learning about one of the most mystical creatures. With their horse-like heads and curly tails, they look like something straight out of a fairy tale. But what makes seahorses unique is how they swim—they don’t glide like most fish. Instead, they hover like little underwater hummingbirds. Their tiny fins beat so fast you can barely see them, yet they move oh so slowly through the water. There's a catch to their vertical lifestyle: they're easily swept away by ocean currents, so we usually see them hanging on to seagrass and mangrove roots. There are two commonly sighted species near Sanibel – the dwarf and lined seahorse – we’ll do our best to catch both, learn how to identify them, and experiment with movement through the water. Quit seahorsin’ around and grab your sunscreen – summer is almost here!
