About This Activity

Description

At the Y, swimming is a life skill. Our swim lessons prepare kids of all ages to stay safe and have fun in the water, building strong swimmers and confident kids. In the school age swim program, swimmers will develop personal water safety and basic swimming skills. As the swimmer progresses, strokes are introduced and techniques begin to be refined using an age appropriate approach. Stage 1-Water Acclimation-Increases comfort with underwater exploration and introduces basic self-rescue skills performed with assistance. Goals for this class are front glide and back glide to the wall 5feet away. Be able to float on front and back 10 secs and recover independently. Learn how to swim, float and swim 10 feet as well as push, turn, and grab independently. Stage 2- Water Movement- Encourages forward movement in water and basic self-rescue skills performed independently. In this class, children are taught skills that focus on body position and control, propelling forward and directional change. Stage 3- Water Stamina- Children focus on swimming longer distances and are introduced to rotary breathing, integrated rotary breathing and integrated arm and leg action. This class develops intermediate self-rescue skills performed at longer distances than in previous stages. Stage 4- Stroke Introduction- Introduces basic stroke techniques front crawl and back crawl and reinforces water safety through treading water and elementary backstroke. Children will be introduced to the breaststroke kick as well as the butterfly kick to swim 15yards. Stage 5- Introduces breaststroke and butterfly and reinforces water safety through treading water and sidestroke. Increase endurance of any stroke or combination of strokes to 50 yards. Front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke increased to 25 yards. Introduction of butterfly simultaneous arm action and kick to 15 yards. Stage 6- Refines stroke techniques on all major competitive strokes and encourages swimming as part of a healthy lifestyle. Increase endurance of any stroke or combination of strokes to 150 yards. Students will be introduced to flip turns for front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke open turns. Additionally, students will increase front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke to 50 yards. Butterfly endurance will be increased to 25 yards. Introduction to Swim Club- A non-competitive swim club that refines stroke techniques and practices competitive strokes.
