About This Activity
Write On! Summer Camp is the ideal experience for nurturing and encouraging the young writer. Our program is designed to give young writers opportunities to craft and revise their favorite work for publication in our student magazine as well as explore new writing genres. Each day starts with small group writing instruction where students discover how to keep a writer's notebook, write "small," build up a "hot spot," and other fun revision tools to breathe life and excitement into writing. With their writing coaches nearby, students apply these skills in their writer's notebooks and receive immediate, supportive feedback from their coach and writing group. Next, students choose their from four different writing clubs. Clubs include fiction writing such as fantasy and mystery writes and non-fiction writing such as newspaper reporting and movie reviews. Clubs also provide opportunities to improve specific skills such as writing with vivid verbs and using dialogue. Plus, there is the ever-popular editor's table where students can sign up to work one on one with a writing coach on a story they've been working on all year or a new story they would like extra help on. In this way, students can design a plan each day to create the writing experience best suited for them. Also included in the week is a visit and discussion with a professional author and our traditional "author's toasting" to celebrate our end of week publication. Write On! Summer Camp is a one of a kind experience--named Best of the Beehive by Salt Lake Magazine as "The Best Camp for Young Authors." It's a week that builds memories, creates friendships and inspires young writers to continue writing long after the summer ends
