Campers will have a crash course in selected periods of Florida history from Juan Ponce De Leon’s search of gold and the fountain of youth through the Flagler era. During the week, campers will grab their journals and a pencil as we embark on several walking fieldtrips and an Old Town Trolley ride to tour secret places in the former Ponce de Leon Hotel and historic St Augustine. Campers will travel through time via portals or teleportation devices that their minds’ conjure to a historical time period of their choice. Along the way, people and events of their chosen time period may clash with a galaxy far, far away, travel interstellar distances through other parallel universes, or perhaps inhabit an asteroid. Campers will use fantasy and myth to craft stories that include important historical figures and events. During writers’ workshop, campers will use primary and secondary sources and annotate for evidence. They will participate in mini lessons on writing techniques, exercises to awaken creativity and ignite ideas, and discussions on editing and oral presentation skills. Every writer will receive individual attention, and will be inspired and encouraged to polish their writing and speaking skills in a fun, interactive environment. The final product will be a creative newscast production using green screen technology! To give our brains a rest from time-travel, after lunch, we will take a dip in the pool, head to the campus recreation room for a game of ping pong or foosball, and play a game or two of volleyball. Campers should bring a bag lunch, water bottle, towel, sunscreen, and conservative swim suit each day. Complete payment is needed upon registration. No refunds. NOTE: Instructors may approve campers younger or older than ages specified.
