About This Activity

Bio: My name is Yuliya Lebedev. I am the mother of two, a Chess player and a chess teacher. I was introduced to Chess in my early childhood by my father who showed me the basic moves and tactics. I watched him playing Chess with his friends and later on I started playing with him myself. At the time, we lived in a very small town which didn’t have Chess club or Chess school. My real devotion to Chess started when I entered the 7th grade and my family moved to a larger city with two Chess Schools in the area. All subsequent years of my life became a wonderful adventure in the kingdom of Chess. During the first year of studies I attended classes 3 times a week, participated in school tournaments and, on winter and summer vacation, went to chess camps. Following years I attended classes 5 days a week and joined various individual and team chess competitions. I took part in several international chess tournaments and made many friends in the world of Chess. During my University years, I returned to that Chess School as a teacher and taught Chess to Elementary and Middle school students of different levels of competency, from beginners to intermediate. I organized chess tournaments for kids to ensure their skills growing. I gave them instructions and monitored their progress. My life took many different turns over the years. I studied linguistics in Moscow, Russia, and was invited to come to Bucknell University as a Teaching Assistant. I got married and stayed in the US. I opened and ran my own home-based business. My family recently moved to State Collage area and now I am exploring new opportunities. Chess has always been my favorite sport. I have always enjoyed playing chess with friends, analyzing games of grand masters, and solving chess problems. I brought my favorite chess books from Russia. I have different chess programs on my computer and I have access to different chess resources online, both in English and in Russian. Benefits of Chess for young minds a
