About This Activity
Description
In On Stage: Spotlight, where everyone's a star! This year, we're diving into the magic of Broadway with materials from the hit musical Cats! Over two weeks, campers will explore both performance and design aspects of theater, culminating in an abridged production. We will take on roles both onstage and behind the scenes, contributing to costume creation using a mix of crowd sourced and provided materials - think leggings, fur, jackets, and more (not just leotards, though those are an options!). We hope to have a variety of Cats in all shapes, sizes, and styles. Each day begins with engaging warm-ups focused on physicality, vocal skills, imagination, and concentration. Here's what we'll be doing:
- creating & developing characters
- rehearsing scenes/songs
- blocking/choreographing musical numbers
- learning music
- set work and scene painting
- constructing props and costumes
- playing drama games
- exploring theater space and terminology
On Stage: Spotlight Camp will be located at Heffner Park Community Center (42 Oswego Avenue Takoma Park, MD 20912) from June 23rd-27th. For the second week of camp, June 30th to July 3rd, participants will meet in the Auditorium of the Takoma Park Community Center (7500 Maple Avenue Takoma Park, MD 20912) ending with a showcase performance on Thursday, July 3! There will be no camp on Friday July 4th.
A $40 materials fee is due on the first day of camp to cover set materials, props, craft supplies, costumes, music purchase, lyrics & script. Campers will get to keep some of their costume pieces and set/prop creations. While our emphasis is on the creative process rather than the final product, our audiences are always delighted by what we bring to the stage. Join us for an unforgettable theatrical experience!
