About This Activity

FREE sampler class! In Minecraft, Redstone is the equivalent of electricity. It is both an energy source and can be used to transmit information, allowing players to power their world and invent unique contraptions and interactive systems. We will cover the basics of electricity with real world and game applications: signal length and strength, powering outputs (e.g. doors, lights, dispensers) and using inputs (e.g. buttons, light sensors, pressure plates). Kids can quickly start introducing objects like clocks, locks, hidden doors, traps, elevators, and more into their world. They then move on from basic logic gates (e.g. NOT, AND, OR) to circuits with more complex components and conditional statements (e.g. latches, t flip-flops, pulse generators, randomizers, binary adders). We will introduce slime blocks, blocks that other blocks can stick to and move with. Using slime blocks, kids can create flying machines and moving giant doors. Triggered by Redstone, command blocks can be enabled to execute even more powerful commands. This requires text based input and is a fun first experience with command syntax . At the end of the program, kids will be able to build large, complex contraptions (e.g. digital clocks, tic tac toe games) with understanding of electricity, logic and design. Untap the power of Minecraft with Redstone! Through playing Minecraft, kids are actively learning about electricity and invention. Program topics: Redstone and Electricity Basics Turning things On and Off (Inputs and Outputs) Signal Strength and Comparators Pulsed Signals Logic Gates Slime Block Mechanics Command Blocks
