About This Activity

Rocket science is the epitome of interdisciplinary cooperation. For the past century, scientists and engineers have employed the key principles of their respective fields in pursuit of space exploration. This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of rocket science, taking them through the stages of space exploration and the concepts behind them. Thrust is considered in terms of combustion, pressure, momentum and Newton’s laws. Types of energy, kinetic and potential, will be explored with respect to orbits, satellites, and the application of Kepler’s laws. Orbital mechanics will be introduced in terms of angular momentum and spacecraft orientation. Spacecraft design incorporating aerodynamics, atmospheric conditions, and re-entry will be discussed. Finally, students will apply their developing understanding of rocketry towards the construction of low thrust rockets
