Lost Maples State Natural Area is near Vanderpool, in the Hill Country southwest of Kerrville. It is about a 3½ -hour drive from Austin. When we arrive at the park, it is an easy night hike about a mile to our campsite. We will backpack about 5 miles on Saturday, and about 3 miles on Sunday morning. We will leave the park for Austin by about 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. Drivers will be trip leaders, trip assistants, and/or parent chaperones. Participants who ride in Camp Fire vans or with volunteer drivers are encouraged to bring an appropriate contribution for their driver’s gas. Backpackers should bring their own gear and meals including Sunday lunch, as detailed in equipment lists provided at Orientation. We will be able to treat spring water on Saturday. Bring water containers sufficient for approximately 3 liters/quarts of water per person. It is possible to fill water containers at the park picnic area, but Austin water tastes better. This trip includes skills workshops about knives and knots, and a service project. Lost Maples State Natural Area offers deep, cool canyons, flowing springs, windswept ridges with views, and, often in the spring, really nice wildflowers.
