About This Activity

Description

(Ages 14 - 18)

Introducing a new format! AP Music Theory at Levine is now structured as a concentrated 30-week course that prepares students for the AP Music Theory Exam after one school year. Weekly class meetings are divided into Written Skills and Aural Skills sections, with a 10-minute break between sections.

This course provides an introduction to college-level music fundamentals, musicianship (sight singing, listening, dictation, and transcription), harmony, musical analysis, and composition. AP Music Theory prepares students with a broad base of knowledge and skills that are essential for performance and composition in many musical genres, including classical, jazz, and pop.

The syllabus of the instructor of this course has been authorized by the College Board. Students have permission to use the "AP" designation on their transcripts sent with college applications only for courses whose syllabus has been authorized by the College Board. This is a graded course and students may be able to obtain college credit based on their performance on the AP Exam.

Please note: Students must have the ability to read and write standard musical notation. Basic performance skills in voice or on an instrument are also strongly recommended. The course is recommended for high-school aged musicians, but younger students who demonstrate extraordinary accomplishments in music theory may enroll with the instructor's permission. Students must take an AP placement exam prior to registering for the class. Students are provided with textbooks and sight singing books; there is an additional $100 materials fee to cover this cost.

For more information, and to schedule a placement exam, please contact Evan Meier, Theory Department Chair, at (202) 686-8000 x1598 or emeier@levinemusic.org.
