This trip stays at our Field Camp near Windy Ridge, on the east side of Mount St. Helens. The night before the hike, allow us to treat you to a delicious dinner prepared by our staff and catered to your needs. Our drive-in Field Camp is equipped with a fully functioning outdoor kitchen, large shared canvas sleeping tents with cots and a woodstove (sleeps 9), and a composting toilet with a view of Mount Rainer! On our first night around a campfire*, the geologist will regale you with tales of the mountain; past, present, and future. An early morning Saturday has the group on the trail by 7:30 AM, where we will hike along the Pumice Plain amongst carpets of wildflowers and geologic wonders, guided by our staff and the geologist. Once we leave the designated trail, the group will cross a dynamic and unbridged stream in order to ascend into the crater. The off-trail travel is exhilarating; with uneven, loose, and steep terrain with sights to behold. This hike is not for the faint of heart and is well worth the effort to have lunch at the terminus of the miraculous Crater Glacier. After returning to the trailhead by 5:00 PM, we will spend another night at camp, where our staff will treat you to another hearty dinner after a long day’s work. We will have a campfire and relax after our hike and have breakfast Sunday morning before we all depart. While we will have plenty of potable water available, please note our camp is rustic and there is no running water, showers, or electricity at camp, and little to no cell service. You are welcome to bring your own tent if preferred. *Campfires are subject to burn ban restrictions.
