Join us for a lantern walk around Lilly Lake! This program has two parts. One involves getting creative at home and building a lantern with stuff you have around the house and the other involves getting outside for an evening walk around Lilly Lake.
This event is free with park admission. Park admission is $5 per car for Marion County Residents and $6 per car for out-of-county residents. No registration is required. Cash and credit cards are accepted at the gates.
Tips for making a lantern:
Use your creativity to make a lantern at home. Seeing the variety of lanterns produced by the community is one of the things that makes this event so fun and festive!
*Repurposing materials is highly encouraged.
*Avoid using glass in your creation.
*Give your lantern a handle or a comfortable way to carry it.
*Keep it lightweight!
*Do not use real flames.
*Battery-operated candles or glow sticks will help protect the forest.
Not feeling creative? Really just don't have time to make a lantern? No worries! You can use a flashlight or a store-bought lantern (battery-operated) or you can walk with glowsticks. We recommend you cover the end of the flashlight with a piece of fabric or red plastic wrap to reduce the brightness of the white light.Location:
The walk takes place around Lilly Lake inside Eagle Creek Park. The address for the 71st Street Gate is 7100 N. Eagle Creek Parkway. The address for the 56th Street Gate is 5700 N. Eagle Creek Parkway. Gate staff can give you a park map. There are also directional signs in the park for Lilly Lake. The 71st St. Gate will close at 6:00pm and the 56th St. Gate will close at 7:30pm. If you arrive (or leave) after 6:00pm, you will have to use the 56th Street Gate. You must exit the park before the 56th Street Gate closes.
There are two designated parking areas available near the Lake. You may also park in the left lane of the road that parallels Lilly Lake south of 65th St. There are additional large parking lots near Shelter A and at the Ornithology Center. Please bring your own lighting for traveling to and from your vehicle in the dark.
Joining for the walk:
Sunset will be at 5:21pm. This walk will be a one-way track around Lilly Lake and will begin at 5:00pm. You can make as many laps around the lake as you want in the allotted time. One lap around the lake is approximately 1/2 mile and mostly flat. Some areas of the trail have exposed roots. Staff will close laps around the lake shortly before 7:00pm.
The Lantern Walk Trail is natural surface trail and chipped limestone. Some areas are uneven, have exposed roots, or may become squishy/muddy after rain. Please call 317-327-7148 if you would like more information about accessibility and accommodations.
Please dress for the weather. This program will take place unless there are unsafe driving conditions. Please check the Park Naturalist Facebook Page here before heading to the park if the weather is questionable. Please note that rain can make parts of the trail muddy/squishy.
The Lilly Lake restrooms have been winterized. A port-o-let will be available near the 56th and 71st St. gate houses.
There will be no food or drinks available at the event. Feel free to pack your own drinks and snacks. Alcohol is prohibited.
