Description
The American Red Cross Lifeguard course provides entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illness until emergency medical services personnel takes over. Textbooks are covered by the registration fee.To enroll in the lifeguard course, you must be at least 15 years old prior to the last day of the session.
Participants must be able to pass the following prerequisite skills on the first day of class:
- Swim 300 yards continuously using front crawl or breaststroke.
- Tread water for 2 minutes without using your arms.
- Retrieve a 10-pound diving brick at a depth of 7-10 feet.
To successfully complete the certification, you must:
- attend all classes during the course (be prepared to swim)
- participate in all skill sessions/drills, activities, and scenarios
- demonstrate competency in all required skills and scenarios
- pass 2 final multiple-choice exams with at least 80 percent
The class sessions will require strenuous activity. You are encouraged to check with your health care professional before participating in the course. If a medical condition or disability exists that may prevent participation, please contact Payton Kryla at the MAC to discuss reasonable accommodation prior to registration.
Upon successful completion participants will receive an American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED that is valid for 2 years.
Interested in working for the MACRD after being certified? Submit an application for employment prior to the first day of the session. If you successfully complete the course and are hired by MACRD, your registration fee will be refunded.
Refund Policy:
All refunds will be assessed a 6% ActiveNet processing fee. Account credits will not be charged this fee.
Patrons may cancel their participation in a program at any time and are encouraged to do so as soon as possible. Credits and refunds will be granted as follows:
Pre-registration required activities:• 100% refund, transfer or account credit, 15 days or more before activity registration closes• 50% refund, transfer or account credit, 7-14 days before activity registration closes• No refund, transfer or credit, 6 days or less before activity registration closesDrop-in activities:• 100% refund, transfer or account credit prior to the start of the activity• No refund, transfer or credit after activity has started
The executive director and/or their designee has the authority to grant exceptions to these guidelines on an as-needed, situational basis. Documentation will be provided and approved in writing.
